Christmas balls with charisma
There is something very special and almost magical about Christmas balls. The way they glow or reflect the light in the Christmas tree. Many people may not even be able to imagine decorating a Christmas tree without the delightful glass balls.
Long before the glass balls became a reality, the Christmas tree was usually decorated with something edible. In 18th-century Germany and later in Denmark, the Christmas tree was decorated with gilded apples or potatoes.
At Juleeventyr.com, we do not carry fruit or vegetables, but instead we have a wide selection of glass and plastic balls, which we truly believe belong to Christmas.
The Christmas ball is a German invention
It wasn't until around the 1890s in Denmark that Christmas balls gained popularity among the Christmas tree decorations. There were not only round glass balls, but also all kinds of glass ornaments imported from Germany. The glass ornament often represented something that you do not normally associate with Christmas. For example, people liked to pay tribute to society's technological progress or something they were particularly fond of. Therefore, it was not unusual for certain symbols to adorn the Christmas tree in the form of glass figurines.
In the south-east German town of Lauscha, there were several glass factories, which since the 17th century had been known to make glass eyes. As early as 1597, several of the city's glass manufacturers began producing round and quite simple glass balls.
It wasn't until the American shop owner Frank Woolworth visited the German city, took a batch of Christmas balls home and introduced them to American consumers, that the spread of the round glass ornament began.
Around 1890, the sale of Christmas balls had increased to 25 million dollars in Woolworths stores alone.
Decorative glass balls
Although the Christmas ball has many years behind it, it still exists today in many different guises and reinterpretations.
At Juleeventyr.com, we love that Christmas balls and glass ornaments are available in almost every imaginable size, shape, form and quality. At the shop, you will find both the classic plain colored glass balls and the beautifully mouth-blown and hand-painted ones, which are shaped like, for example: animals, automobiles or Santa Claus. You will also find modern interpretations, in line with the interior design trends, such as: special colors, structures or materials.
Create new Christmas memories
Your Christmas decorations contain much more than just the material they are made of. The entire family's Christmas history and memories lie in the Christmas decorations you choose to adorn your home with.
The Christmas decorations can be associated with childhood Christmas evenings. If you want your Christmas decorations to be passed down from generation to generation, pick high-quality glass decorations.
Beautifully decorated by hand, mouth-blown glass balls are not only beautiful, but also a type of decoration that can easily be passed down without degrading over time. Therefore, consider choosing your Christmas decorations carefully so that you find the pieces that mean something to you and your family. Old, good quality Christmas decorations are in high demand nowadays, which means that it can be an extremely profitable business to take particularly good care of the family's Christmas decorations.
Here at Juleeventyr.com shop, you will find high quality glass ornaments from Hanco Glasbläseri, the Austrian glassblowing manufacturer and the German producer, Glasbläserei Thüringer Weihnacht.
Christmas balls are also plastic-fantastic
If you have pets or small children, you may well have your concerns about the slightly more expensive hand-produced glass ornaments, which are at the higher end of the price range. When decorating, it would therefore be advisable to hang the finer decorations at a height where the little fingers cannot reach them and then settle for plastic Christmas balls at the accessible height. You will of course also find a wide selection of plastic Christmas balls, which are perfect for this purpose.
